What made you want to become a
musician? Was there any real defining moment?
As long as I can remember I was putting on little concerts for my family. And the defining moment was when someone told me we wouldn't make it.
How did you learn to play your instrument(s)? Did you teach yourself or did you take lessons?
I taught myself mostly. But when we went on tour I took a few lessons for conditioning.
What do you think you would be doing right now if your music career didn’t take off?
I would definately still be doing something in the music industry such as producing, A & R, or engineering for other bands.
How did you guys meet?
We came from different bands in St. Louis and meshed together, hence the name.
What are your goals as a band? Are they any different from when you first started out?
Our goals as a band is to remember where we came from and to always have fun. There was a time when it was like work, but i think we are all back on track now.
Are you done recording for the new album?
Most of the songs are complete for the new record but we are still weeding through other songs to pick the best for the record.
Do you have any song names or the name of the album picked out yet?
A couple of the song names are Smother me, Watch me Drown, Wonderful, and Down. A title for the record has not yet been decided. But I think I like "Throw the dirt".
Where do you get inspiration for your song writing?
Most of the songs just depend on how you are feeling that day. Not really sure what inspires me but I think there is a song in every situation that we encounter.
What are some of the songs about?
A lot of the songs are a more angry heart meaning about some of the obstacles we have come across in the music industry.
Will the new album differ in any way from Lowercase? What can fans expect?
Our fans should still expect Mesh StL. Some of the songs are a lot heavier but still very melodically driven.
How do you go about writing new songs? Do you have to write the lyrics first or do you like to write the music first?
When we are writing new songs it differs from song to song. Sometimes I will have a melody first and sometimes the band will have music first.
Are you feeling any pressure to beat the success of Lowercase?
No pressure at all. We're just doing what we love to do and we just want to be able to keep doing it and that is good enough for us.
What do you hope fans will take away from your music?
A bright light in a very dark place.
Any plans for a new tour yet?
The new tour has not yet been arranged, although I would suspect a tour in the spring of 2003.
Are their any bands you would like to tour with?
I would like to back out with our friends from Puddle of Mudd.
What has been the best tour in the past that you have been on?
Puddle of Mudd
Do you like playing smaller shows or bigger shows the best?
I prefer the medium shows because they are not to big yet intimate at the same time.
What do you think is the best or worst thing about touring?
The best thing on tour is fans and cities. And the worst thing is not enough personal space on the tour bus. But we manage. haha
What is the craziest thing a fan has done for you?
One girl actually climbed down from the balcony onto the speakers to get on stage. I'm not sure if she was coming after me though because security got her pretty quick.
Do you have any horror stories from the road?
No major horror stories from the road, although we did lose our trailer off the back of the bus one time. That pretty much sucked.
What was it like being in a commercial? Was it any different seeing yourself on a commercial than hearing yourself on the radio?
I don't like seeing myself on t.v. it just like hearing your voice on an answering machine.
What kind of music are you listening to right now(what bands)?
I am really getting into this new band eminescence on the daredevil soundtrack. I don't think there are enough female "ROCK" stars yet.
Are there any bands out there right now that you think people should know about?
I think everyone should check out Eminescence.
Do you have any advice for other bands trying to make a living out of being a musician?
Be a carpenter. Just kidding. Just stick with it and never take no for an answer. Remember there is no such thing as an over night success.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years/where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Cancun
Is there anything you would like to add (last words)?
Thanks to everyone for the support and interest. We're all looking forward to see what you think about the new record.
Peace, Scotty.
