His music is already being compared the legendary Prince and since to being signed to Jive Records, Raheem Devaughn is more ready than ever to let the public hear his music. Devaughn has two albums under his belt right now. The first, The Love Experience is out in stores now. His sophomore album, which will be out next year, was made after he signed to Jive Records. Originally from Washington, D.C., Devaughn wasn’t even looking to get noticed.
“I really wasn’t looking to be signed. I started putting out independent music in 2000. I had a grass roots following in D.C. down in the metropolitan area. I think a buzz circulated in New York and I ended up doing a showcase for Jive Records. They said they wanted to sign me right on the spot,” says Raheem Devaughn.
“I have an old soul and I refer to my music as timeless,” says Devaughn. “The older I got I just started making it happen. This is definitely what I wanted to do my whole life,” says Devaughn about his budding signing career.
Critics and fans alike are already designating him as the next Prince, which is a big compliment for Devaughn. “Those are pretty big shoes to even try to walk in. I really don’t play any instruments and I really wasn’t trained musically. Any comparison is a compliment at this point in my career. The true definition of the artist that I am will not be defined until my fifth or sixth album.”
Special guests on his upcoming sophomore album include rapper Q-Tip and hip-hop duo, Floetry. Devaughn’s first album, The Love Experience is out now and his sophomore effort, Love Behind A Melody should be out by early 2007.
