With Nelly Furtado and Hot Hot Heat bursting upon the scene from British Columbia, newly alt-rock band, Armchair Cynics, are looking forward to blowing the scene wide open. “It’s a bit of a hot spot right now. I think we are going a little different route with modern rock. We kind of want to set our own level to work towards,” says drummer Ryan Rae. With a sound that echoes fellow Canadian juggernauts Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth, Armchair Cynics is an alt-rock band you either want on your iPod or CD player.
Winner of Vancouver’s Bandfest, the band has received more exposure than the norm. “It helped us get radio airplay and helped us to get noticed,” Rae says of Bandfest. “People have this misconception that as soon as you are on the radio and you see our face on television all the time that you’re rich. It’s totally not true. We still have to juggle our day jobs.”
“We are trying to conquer Canada first and at the same time trying to look for a record label in the states. We really want to break in the states, but we want to finish up our new record first,” Rae says. “Once you break into the states, there are so many places where you can play, but in Canada the population is so small that you’re driving thirteen hours to the next town.”
Armchair Cynics are currently in the studio finishing up their second full length LP, which will be due out sometime this year.
